Let’s Keep Doing the Same Thing Over and Over and Over and Over Again

“It’s time for us to stop being soft on immigrants.”

“That’s an odd thing to say. Trump demonizes them at every turn, and we’ve had months of mass deportations, disappearings, and state-sponsored racial profiling. How have we been soft?”

“An immigrant beheaded a guy in Dallas last week.”

“I heard about that. The victim, Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah, was brutally murdered. But he was in Texas, run by Republicans, in a nation controlled by Trump. Wouldn’t that mean Trump’s policies are not working?”

“What? Of course not. This murdering immigrant was released by Sleepy Joe.”

“But why didn’t he get picked up by Trump’s troops? Trump said they would target criminals in their sweeps, but instead masked men have been picking innocent people off the streets, arresting workers in Home Depot parking lots and Hyundai plants, detaining law-abiding asylum seekers at their court dates, all as an easy way to reach 3,000 arrests per day. But padding numbers to meet arbitrary arrest limits doesn’t make anyone any safer.”

“That’s your Trump Derangement Syndrome talking. I feel safer.”

“Why? Last year, you conflated one violent incident as symptomatic of the failures of the current administration. Now we have another, more violent act happening under the Trump Administration, which would indicate that the current policies are a failure as well. Seems like the true Trump Derangement Syndrome is the cult-like belief that, contrary to any and all evidence, he is doing a good job.”

“No, Trump is magic, and he will solve this migrant crime epidemic. And he’s going to start by making sure Nagamallaiah gets his due punishment.”

“Nagamallaiah? He was the victim.”

“Huh?”

“You said you want to punish the victim. Nagamallaiah.”

“Nagamallaiah? What kind of name is that? Where’s he from?”

“India.”

“Well, I’m sure he did something wrong.”
