Funny how, in the evolution of language, some words don’t exactly lose their original meaning, but you would never use them in that context in modern prose. For example:

“He lit the dining-room lamp, got out a cigar, and began pacing the room, ejaculating.” from The Invisible Man, H.G. Wells, pg. 90, Airmont Classic.

I know what you are thinking — no one uses the hyphen in compound modifiers anymore…
