Every election is a new opportunity to discover more unpleasant realities about our fellow citizens. And, if Günter Grass’s Crabwalk is any indication, we should have been prepared for recurring disappointments:
“,,,the long-submerged hate slogan ‘Death to all Jews’ bubbled to the digital surface of contemporary reality: foaming hate, a maelstrom of hate. Good God! How much has been damned up all this time, is growing day to day, building pressure for action.” pg 160, translated by Krishna Winston
After reading that, no one should have been surprised when a bunch of American boneheads marched in Charlottesville chanting about Jews, and no one should be surprised when it happens again, post-2024, since there are people out there looking for an opening, however small, to send their hate to the surface:
“It doesn’t end. Never will it end.” pg. 234
